Ronnie Milsap was born in Robbinsville, North Carolina, in 1943. He grew up with visual impairments and developed an early interest in music, drawing from country, gospel, and rhythm and blues. Artists like Ray Charles and Sam Cooke were early influences.
He moved to Nashville in the late 1960s and got his own recording contract in 1970. His breakthrough came with "Pure Love," which topped the country charts in 1974. Over the next decade, he released a string of hits including "Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Ends," "I Hate You," and "Smoky Mountain Rain." His vocals mixed country twang with soulful grit.
In 1984, Milsap was diagnosed with glaucoma, which threatened his eyesight. He continued performing and recording while managing the condition. His discography includes over 50 albums, with songs like "What A Difference You've Made In My Life" and "I'm No Good At Goodbyes" among his work.
