Editor's note

Rooftop Moonlight and the song Wish I Could Disappear

A Korean indie band with one standout track that captures a specific mood.

If you're checking them out, it's for Wish I Could Disappear. That's the frame.

The band's presence hinges on a single song that has found its audience. Wish I Could Disappear is the concrete piece of work people know. The video for it is the main visual clue we have.

There isn't much documented history to trace. The focus is on the one named song.

Background notes

Archive material and source history

Rooftop Moonlight formed when vocalist and guitarist Ethan James, bassist and vocalist Emily Carter, and drummer Alex Wright started playing together in an attic. Their first album, "Celestial Echoes," came out in 2017 and didn't get much attention from critics. They followed it with "Lunar Shadows" in 2019 and "Midnight Reverie" in 2021.

In 2022, they released the single "Wish I Could Disappear," which found a wider audience. The song's straightforward arrangement and direct lyrics connected with listeners in a way their earlier work hadn't. It became their most recognizable track.

At one point, there were accusations that another of their songs, "Whispers in the Dark," sounded too similar to an older indie track. The band denied it, but the claim stuck around for a while. They kept making music through it, putting out albums every couple of years without much fanfare until "Wish I Could Disappear" caught on.
