Rootless formed in Los Angeles in the early 2000s with Alex Ruiz on vocals and guitar, Matt Levin on guitar, Jason Brown on bass, and James Wilson on drums. They started rehearsing in a garage, working on songs that leaned toward soulful melodies and introspective lyrics. For a while they had trouble getting attention from labels or booking decent shows.
In 2006 they put out their debut single "One Day," a ballad about unfulfilled dreams that connected with listeners and got them on the Billboard Hot 100. That led to a major label deal and a U.S. tour. They went on to release three albums: Still Standing in 2008, The Journey in 2012, and Unbreakable in 2016.
Over time they worked with other artists like Brandi Carlile and Common. In 2014 they faced some pushback after playing a political rally, and in 2018 Ruiz was arrested on drug charges. The band supported him through rehab.
