Roque Baroque formed in 2003 around singer-songwriter Rodrigo Amarante, with guitarist Bruno Medina, cellist André Mehmari, and drummer Fernando Catatau. Their debut album came out the following year, introducing a sound that mixed Brazilian popular music with classical touches and some electronic experimentation.
Their song "Cheiro da Dor" became their most recognizable track, a haunting ballad that stood out on that first record. The band released three more albums over the next dozen years, each one shifting their approach slightly while keeping a generally melancholic feel.
They developed a cult following, partly because their experimental performances and lyrics didn't fit neatly into mainstream Brazilian rock. The group's last album, "Máquina de Roda Gigante," arrived in 2016.
