Rosa Helena came from Santo Amaro in northeastern Brazil, where she grew up hearing the traditional forró rhythms that would later shape her music. In the mid-1990s, she formed a band with her brother Antônio on guitar and Zé Marcolino on drums, with Helena herself handling vocals and accordion.
Their 2001 debut album included "Virgem Maria," a song that became widely known in Brazil. Its lyrics address the Virgin Mary directly, asking for guidance and protection in a way that connected with many listeners. Other songs like "Deus Proverá" and "Jesus Caminho, Verdade e Vida" continued in this devotional vein.
Some religious conservatives objected to how the band used sacred imagery in what they saw as a secular context. Helena kept making music anyway, releasing albums like "Salve Rainha" in 2005 and "A Fé que Move o Mundo" in 2010 with her bandmates.
