He recorded for labels like Sun and Vee-Jay, and his 1958 single 'Just A Little Bit' became his biggest hit, a shuffling R&B number that got some radio play despite stations sometimes balking at the lyrics.
His band, the Memphis Blues Boys, included players like Ike Turner on piano and sax, Willie Nix on drums, and Robert Lockwood Jr. on guitar. They cut a series of singles through the early 1960s, including 'No More Doggin'', 'Wang Dang Doodle', and 'Booted'.
Gordon's records had an uptempo shuffle feel, with his vocals leaning toward the soulful side and lyrics that could be playful or sly. That sound, and 'Just A Little Bit' in particular, got picked up by later rock and soul acts.
