Gary Rossington and Dale 'Dickey' Betts, both from Skynyrd, started the group with singer and guitarist Allen Collins, bassist Leon Wilkeson, and drummer Barry Lee Harwood. Their self-titled debut album included 'Don't Misunderstand Me,' which got some radio play and became one of their better-known songs.
They put out a couple more albums in the early 1980s, but things got complicated. Collins was seriously injured in a car accident in 1986 and was left paralyzed. There were also legal disputes over the band's name with Lynyrd Skynyrd's former management, which led them to briefly perform as The Rossington Band around 1990 before going back to the original name.
