Roy Acuff was born in Maynardsville, Tennessee in 1903. He dropped out of school at 15 to play music, performing at local fairs and dances before joining the Grand Ole Opry in 1933.
His 1942 song 'Advice to Joe' became a national hit. Other songs like 'Wabash Cannonball' and 'Be Honest With Me' helped define his sound. He led a band called the Smoky Mountain Boys.
In the 1950s, his conservative political views created some tension with fans. He also had financial troubles from poor investments later on. He kept performing and recording through those years.
