Roy Buchanan

Roy Buchanan was a guitarist who played with a raw intensity that felt both technically precise and emotionally direct. He recorded "The Messiah Will Come Again" in 1971 for his "Second Album." It's a slow, haunting piece built around his guitar, using the instrument to carry the song's weight in a way that felt more like a vocal line. The lyrics were written by Merle Haggard, but Buchanan made the song his own. His playing on it, and on songs like "Hey Joe," showed how he could pull deep feeling from a few sustained notes.

Buchanan's career was uneven, complicated by personal struggles that made it hard for him to maintain steady momentum.
