Royal Teeth started in New Orleans around 2010, with Gary Larsen on vocals, Nora Patterson on guitar, Josh Hefner on bass, and Patrick Nolan on drums. Their first EP, 'Act Naturally,' came out in 2011 and got some attention for its harmonies, which people compared to Fleetwood Mac or Crosby, Stills & Nash. They played shows around the country, building a following without much fuss.
In 2012, the single 'The Best' became a radio hit on alternative stations, reaching the top 20 on some charts. That song, along with others like 'Wild' and 'Heartbeats,' helped them land spots on TV and at festivals. Drummer Patrick Nolan left in 2013, and the band kept going with a different lineup.
They put out a second album called 'Amateurs' independently in 2014, which stirred some talk in the industry about whether skipping a label was a good move. The band's sound stayed rooted in melodic pop with layered vocals, but they didn't chase another big radio moment after that.
