Rojdestvo formed in 1989 in Novosibirsk, with Alexei Romanov on guitar and vocals, Alexander Babenko on keyboards, Sergei Kanaev on bass, and Alexei Karmanov on drums. Their sound had a rough, rebellious edge that drew a following in the late Soviet years, though their lyrics and performances sometimes ran into trouble with authorities.
In the early 1990s, after the Soviet Union collapsed, the band found a wider audience. Their song "Tak Khochetsya Zhit" became something of an anthem for that uncertain time. But around 1996, Romanov left the group, and the split was public and messy. After that, the band went through more lineup changes and legal issues.
