Rua do Absurdo was a punk band from Lisbon that started playing in the early 1980s. Their singer, António Manuel Ribeiro, went by the name Tóli. The group included Fernando Ataíde on guitar, Marco Santos on bass, and Francisco Rebelo on drums.
Their lyrics touched on things like drug use and political corruption, which sometimes got them into trouble with more conservative listeners. Tóli had an eccentric way of performing that added to their reputation for being confrontational. They put out albums like 'Escorrego' in 1986 and 'Do Outro Lado da Montanha' in 1988.
Musically, they mixed punk rock with bits of Portuguese folk and other experimental sounds. Songs like 'Afeiçoado' and 'Todalegria' show how they could be both raw and melodic. Their recordings from that period still sound like they were made by a band that didn't quite fit anywhere else.
