Archive material and source history

Ruah Jah was a reggae band that formed around four musicians: Michael Rose on vocals, Nahki on guitar, Leroy 'Horsemouth' Wallace on bass, and Dwight 'Bubblers' Pinkney on drums. They put out their first album, 'Jah Is Mighty,' in 1980. Their sound mixed roots reggae with some soul and gospel touches.

They're probably best known for their version of 'Eli Eli Lamá Sabactani,' which is an Aramaic phrase from the crucifixion story. The recording had a raw, emotional quality that connected with people. Another track people remember is 'A Maldição do Cristo Generico.'

Michael Rose wrote lyrics that dealt with faith and social issues, which sometimes drew criticism. The band went through some lineup changes and took a break in the early 1990s.
