Ruben Studdard won the second season of American Idol in 2003. His version of Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine" during the competition caught people's attention with its soulful delivery. After winning, he released his self-titled debut album that same year, which included the single "Flying Without Wings."
That debut album reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart. He followed it with several more records, including Soulful in 2004 and The Return in 2006. Songs like "Sorry 2004" and "Change Me" came from this period of his career.
Studdard grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, and sang in church and local talent shows. He studied music at Alabama A&M University, where he sang with the gospel choir. These early experiences in gospel and R&B shaped the vocal style he brought to American Idol and his subsequent recordings.
