Archive material and source history

Rufus formed in Chicago in the late 1960s with keyboardist Kevin Murphy, bassist Nate Morgan, drummer Joe Thomas, guitarist Don Myrick, and singer Chaka Khan. Their sound mixed soul, jazz, and rock in ways that didn't fit neatly into radio formats at first. They signed with MCA Records in 1974 and released 'Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan,' which included the hit 'Tell Me Something Good.'

That album and the follow-ups 'Rags to Rufus' and 'Rufusized' found them during the disco era, though their music kept its rhythmic complexity and Khan's powerful vocals. Songs like 'Sweet Thing' and 'Do You Love What You Feel' became staples. Chaka Khan left in 1977 to pursue a solo career, and Patti Austin joined the group.

Rufus recorded eight studio albums. Their catalog includes 'Ain't Nobody,' 'Hollywood,' and 'Once You Get Started.' The band's arrangements were tight and danceable, built around Murphy's keyboards and Khan's commanding presence when she was with them.
