Russian Red

Russian Red is the project of Madrid-based singer-songwriter Lourdes Hernández, who began releasing music under that name in 2005. Her self-titled debut album introduced a sound built around her distinctive voice and spare, folk-leaning arrangements. Songs like 'Loving Strangers' and 'Cagarettes' established her approach: intimate, melodic, and lyrically direct.

She followed that debut with 'Fuerteventura' in 2007, an album that shares its name with one of her more recognizable songs. The track 'Xabier,' released around the same period, became a particular fan favorite for its tender portrayal of complicated feelings. Her writing often sits in that space between affection and distance, a quality that runs through much of her catalog.

Over the next decade, she released several more albums, including 'Agent Cooper' in 2012 and 'Karaoke' in 2017. The music occasionally expanded its textures, but the core remained Hernández's voice and her straightforward, personal songwriting. She has worked with a consistent group of musicians, including guitarist and producer Brian Hunt, bassist Jaime Olmedo, and drummer Israel Medina.

There's a plainness to her work that feels deliberate. The songs don't grandstand; they're small scenes and conversations. Even a title like 'I Hate You But I Love You' gets at that unadorned, sometimes contradictory emotional register she explores. It's music that feels built for quiet rooms and headphones, not arenas.
