Sacred Spirit formed in 2007 as a group of Indigenous musicians interested in preserving and sharing their cultural traditions through music. They've released albums like 'Sacred Spirit' in 2009, 'Spirit Rising' in 2013, and 'Yane - Heja - Hee' in 2016.
The band combines traditional Indigenous melodies with contemporary instrumentation. Their song 'YANE - HEJA - HEE' celebrates Indigenous culture and resilience, telling the story of a young Indigenous woman finding strength in her heritage.
Current members include Daniel Cummings on lead vocals and guitar, Matthew Currie on bass and vocals, and William McEwen on drums and vocals. Some conservative Indigenous groups have criticized the band for commercializing their culture, but Sacred Spirit continues with their approach to music.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
