Archive material and source history

Sad Cafe formed in 1981 with Paul Young on vocals, Pete Kirtley on guitar, Terry Williams on keyboards, Ashley Mulford on bass, and Dave Morgan on drums. Their debut single 'Every Day Hurts' reached the top of the UK charts, and their self-titled debut album followed in 1984. The band's second album, 'Facades,' earned them a Brit Award for Best British Newcomer.

Paul Young left in 1985 to pursue a solo career, which created some instability for the group. They took a break and returned in 1989 with new vocalist Steve Walsh, releasing two more albums, 'Heaven & Hell' and 'So Far.' Sad Cafe disbanded in 1994.

Songs like 'Angel' and 'Everyday' have remained in circulation, often appearing on soft rock and 80s pop compilations. The band's catalog includes straightforward melodic pop with some keyboard-driven arrangements that were typical of the period.
