Sage Francis

Sage Francis came up through Rhode Island's underground hip-hop scene in the late 1990s and early 2000s. His 2002 debut album 'Personal Journals' established his approach: raw, introspective lyrics that felt more like personal essays set to beats than conventional rap tracks. He followed it with 'A Healthy Distrust' in 2005 and 'Li(f)e' in 2007, records that kept his focus on social commentary and self-examination.

While 'Dance Monkey' became his most widely heard song, tracks like 'Cup Of Tea' and 'Smoke And Mirrors' better represent his style, dense with wordplay and delivered in a conversational, sometimes weary-sounding flow.

Francis has been outspoken about political issues, and in 2006 he was arrested during an anti-war protest at the White House. That incident, along with his lyrics criticizing economic inequality and hypocrisy, cemented his reputation as an activist within hip-hop. He's kept releasing albums into the 2020s, including 'Tightrope' in 2021, without ever softening his perspective or chasing trends.
