Monique Saintonge came from Rivière-Pilote in Martinique. Her voice had a particular sweetness that worked well with the rhythms of her homeland. She recorded songs like "Bonsoir cher" and "J'ai dans ma tête un avion."
She performed with Harry Belafonte and Nina Simone at different points. The flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal and composer Michel Legrand also worked with her on some recordings.
Her music included love ballads and pieces that drew from Caribbean traditions. She kept recording through the 1960s and into the late 1980s.
