Salim e Zé Vítor formed in 1973 when Luiz Carlos Ferraz (Salim) and José Vítor de Oliveira met in Rio de Janeiro. They started releasing music in the mid-1970s, with their self-titled debut album coming out in 1976. Their song 'A Outra' appeared on their 1978 album of the same name.
Their music drew from Brazilian styles like samba and bossa nova, with Salim handling vocals and Zé Vítor on guitar. Their lyrics sometimes touched on social and political themes, which occasionally drew criticism. They recorded 'A Cruz de Um Caminhoneiro' with Luiz Paulo & Lunan.
'A Outra' became one of their better-known songs, a ballad about lost love and heartbreak. The duo continued working through the early 1980s, releasing 'O Tempo e a Maré' in 1983.
