Sally Shapiro

Sally Shapiro is the pseudonym of Swedish singer Victoria Bergsman, who started releasing music in the early 2000s. Her first album came out in 2000, simply called 'Sally Shapiro,' and included the track 'Looking at the Stars.' That song became something of a touchstone for the dreamwave sound she was working with, airy synths and a kind of detached, melancholy vocal delivery.

She followed that with 'Disco Romance' in 2005, which leaned a bit more toward danceable rhythms, and then 'Somewhere Else' in 2011. Her songs like 'If It Doesn't Rain' and 'Jackie Jackie (Spend This Winter With Me)' have that same quality of being both wistful and oddly propulsive. In 2021 she put out a collection called 'The Lost Tapes.'

Bergsman has kept the project as a solo endeavor, writing and performing everything herself. The music doesn't really chase trends; it stays in that zone of synth-pop with a hazy, reflective feel, which has earned it a quiet, lasting appeal among listeners who gravitate toward that sound.
