Samba & Canção came together in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1950s. The group included João Gilberto on guitar and vocals, Tom Jobim on piano and as composer, and Vinicius de Moraes writing lyrics. Their debut album 'Chega de Saudade' arrived in 1959, with the title track becoming an early touchstone for what would be called bossa nova.
Their sound mixed Brazilian rhythms with jazz harmonies, which drew some criticism from traditional samba circles at the time. They performed at venues like the Copacabana Palace. The 1961 album 'O Barquinho' featured Jobim compositions including 'Corcovado' and 'Garota de Ipanema.'
In 1962 they collaborated with singer Nara Leão on 'Amor em Paz,' which included Jobim's 'A Felicidade.' Their song 'Vai Ter Que Jogar' remains part of their catalog. The group's work helped establish bossa nova as a distinct style within Brazilian music.
