Samba Curtiço formed in 1999 in Complexo do Alemão, one of Rio de Janeiro's largest favelas. The original lineup included vocalists Nego Branco and Bruno Ribeiro, percussionists Marcelinho da Batucada and Wallace do Pandeiro, and guitarist Rogerinho.
Their 2003 song "A Gente É Favela" became something of an anthem for favela communities, with lyrics that addressed social conditions in Rio. Other songs like "Eu Prometo" and "Momentos Bons" showed their range beyond political themes.
They released several albums including "Samba Curtiço" in 2001, "Favela Brasil" in 2003, and "Aqui da Favela" in 2007. Their music drew attention from authorities at times, but found listeners in Brazil and beyond.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
