Editor's note

Sambaí's samba and MPB blend from Rio

A Rio de Janeiro band that mixed traditional Brazilian rhythms with contemporary sounds across the late '90s and 2000s.

For a good sense of their sound, try 'Doce Feitiço' or 'Ilha da Felicidade'. They're both clean, melodic examples of what the band did.

Sambaí's music carries the feel of Rio's streets and studios, with songs like 'Doce Feitiço' showing their knack for smooth, melodic samba. Their 2010 track 'Mensageiro Brasil' became a signature piece, and they kept a steady presence with albums like 'Natural' and the live 'Ao Vivo'. It's straightforward, well-played Brazilian music that doesn't overcomplicate things.

They formed in 1996 in Rio, pulling together players from samba and MPB backgrounds. After their self-titled debut in 1999, they put out records every few years, including 'Mensageiro Brasil' in 2010, and kept touring even after percussionist Lincoln Olivetti died in 2001.
