Sambalada formed in 1996 in Salvador, Bahia, led by Carlinhos Brown. They started playing local events, mixing samba and reggae with Brazilian traditions. Their early albums included 'Adão' in 2002.
In 2005, the song 'Covardia' became a hit in Brazil, with lyrics addressing violence and prejudice. The band released 'Alegria' the following year. They've worked with artists like Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso.
Some critics said Sambalada was commercializing traditional music, but they kept adapting their sound. Songs like 'Afrodite' and 'Medo de Amar' show their blend of rhythms. The group has continued performing with Brown on vocals.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
