SambaPretoChoroJazZ formed in the 1990s around percussionist Daniel de Almeida, guitarist Fernando Brandão, and vocalist Simone Guimarães. They were joined by bassist Paulo Bromberg, drummer Rodrigo Villas, and saxophonist Zé Carlos. The group's name hints at their approach, which draws from samba, choro, and jazz without settling neatly into any single tradition.
Their debut album came out in 2004, followed by a 2007 collaboration with Milton Nascimento called 'Parceria'. They released a live album in 2010 and another studio record in 2014 titled 'O Samba É Mais Que Samba'. Songs like 'Peneira', 'Ouro', and 'Chegou Samba Preto' show their rhythmic foundation, while 'Salsa Jazz' and 'Sonho de Benin' point to their wider interests.
Their music sometimes drew criticism from purists who preferred styles kept separate. The band's lyrics also touched on social themes that not everyone welcomed.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
