Editor's note

Samiam's melodic punk kept a steady flame.

A Berkeley band that never stopped writing sharp, tuneful songs.

For a quick sense of their sound, 'Ed Says' and 'Paraffin' still hold up. They're just good, straightforward songs.

They've been a reliable presence in indie rock since the late '80s, putting out records that balance melody with a raw edge. Songs like 'Ed Says' from the 1992 album 'Clumsy' capture that early energy perfectly. Even later tracks such as 'Paraffin' show they never lost their knack for a hook.

They formed in Berkeley in the late 1980s and broke through with 'Clumsy' in 1992. After experimenting with more dissonant sounds on albums like 'You Are Freaking Me Out', they've kept recording and touring, releasing 'Stovall' as recently as 2018.

Samiam formed in Berkeley, California in the late 1980s with guitarist Sergie Loobkoff, bassist Aaron Rubin, and drummer Dave Ayer. They released their debut EP 'Coming Apart at Seams' in 1988, and vocalist Jason Beebout joined in 1990 to complete the lineup that would carry them through most of their career.

Their 1992 album 'Clumsy' became a breakthrough, with songs like 'Nightly' and 'Ed Says' capturing the melodic yet raw energy that defined their early sound. They followed it with 'Billy' in 1993, touring steadily and building a following in the indie rock scene. Later albums like 'You Are Freaking Me Out' in 1996 showed them experimenting with more dissonant elements, which divided some listeners.

They've kept recording and playing shows over the decades, putting out albums like 'Dull' in 2006 and 'Stovall' in 2018. Songs such as 'Paraffin' and 'September Holiday' have remained staples in their sets. The band's lineup has stayed remarkably consistent, with Beebout, Loobkoff, Rubin, and Ayer still making music together.
