Editor's note

Samprazer's samba pop from Rio's streets

A Brazilian band that mixed samba with funk and pop, starting with four friends in the mid-2000s.

For a quick sense of their vibe, "Dominó" and "Paixão Certeira" frame it well, one's the breakout hit, the other a steady samba-pop blend.

They caught a wave with "Dominó," a track that became an anthem for blending samba rhythms with pop hooks. Their sound kept evolving through albums like "Na Palma da Mão" and "Samba da Véia," even as they faced occasional criticism for suggestive lyrics or borrowing from tradition. Songs like "Paixão Certeira" show how they held onto samba's roots while pushing into funkier territory.

They formed in the mid-2000s with four friends from Rio de Janeiro, releasing their first album "Tempero do Samba." By 2009's "Na Palma da Mão" and 2013's "Samba da Véia," they were experimenting more, and they dropped another record, "Vem Pra Cá," in 2023.

Samprazer came together in the mid-2000s as a Brazilian band mixing samba with funk and pop. Their song "Dominó" caught on quickly, becoming something of an anthem. They started with four friends from Rio de Janeiro: Marcos Alexandre on vocals, Felipe Escandurras on guitar, Henrique Portugal on bass, and Adriano Cintra on drums.

Their first album was called "Tempero do Samba." Later records like "Na Palma da Mão" from 2009 and "Samba da Véia" from 2013 showed them trying different things while keeping a foot in samba. Other songs people know include "Para," "Não deixe o samba morrer," and "Paixão Certeira."

In 2010, there was some noise about their track "Deixa Falar" sounding too close to a traditional samba tune. They denied copying anything. Their lyrics and stage presence also drew occasional criticism for being too suggestive. They put out another album in 2023 titled "Vem Pra Cá."
