Samuel E. Wright was born in Camden, South Carolina in 1946. He moved to New York City after high school and began working in theater. In 1973, he originated the role of Mufasa in the Broadway production of The Lion King, which led to other stage work including parts in Jesus Christ Superstar and Pippin.
His most recognizable work came in 1989 when he voiced Sebastian the crab in Disney's The Little Mermaid. Wright performed the song Under the Sea, which won an Academy Award. He also sang Kiss the Girl in the same film. These recordings became his most widely heard work.
Wright released several solo albums including a self-titled record in 1985 and an album called Under the Sea in 1990. He continued performing in theater and recording music through the 1990s.
