Samuel Rosa and Janete Faria met as teenagers in Belo Horizonte and started performing together in local bars and festivals. Their debut album came out in 1984, simply titled 'Samuel e Janete,' which included the song 'Acabou As Palavras.' That track in particular seemed to connect with people, becoming something of an anthem about the end of a relationship.
They kept making music through the 80s and 90s, putting out albums like 'Janete e Samuel' in 1986 and 'O Tempo É Quem Diz' in 1990. Their sound mixed soft rock and folk with Brazilian rhythms, and they wrote their own material, with Samuel on guitar and Janete sometimes playing accordion. Other songs from their catalog include 'História de Um Amor' and 'Tapera Velha.'
Their style was intimate and focused on lyrics, which didn't always fit with commercial trends at the time. Some critics found it too heavy or esoteric. But they stuck with it, building a following that appreciated their approach. They released another album, 'Por Que Não?,' in 2003.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
