Samukera formed in 2007 with Takanori Nishikawa on vocals, Kyoichi Kurokawa on guitar, Ryouken Kiyofuji on bass, and Katsunori Ujino on drums. Their debut album came out in 2009, and its lead single 'Ah Ih Shi' found an audience online. They put out a few more records over the next several years, like 'Hyouhaku' in 2011 and 'Senmetsu' in 2013.
Some of their performances drew criticism for how they used traditional Japanese imagery in their costumes. A song from 2013 called 'Rekka' was read by some as having a political edge, which led to a few canceled shows. The band's sound mixed rock and metal with some traditional elements, which gave them a particular place in the scene at the time.
