Samwise.rock formed in São Paulo in 1997, taking their name from the loyal hobbit Samwise Gamgee in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. The original lineup included vocalist Alexandre 'Maninho' Costa, guitarist Rodrigo 'Digão' Monnerat, bassist Lucas 'Lukão' Pereira, and drummer Carlos 'Cadu' Verginelli. Over time, only Maninho and Digão remained as consistent members.
Their song 'Bem Vindo a Bagdá' came out in 2002 and became their most recognizable track. The lyrics were inspired by the U.S. invasion of Iraq the previous year, and it connected with listeners in Brazil as an anti-war statement. The band's debut album 'Samwise.rock' arrived in 2000, followed by other records like 'Vem Ver o Nosso Show' in 2002, 'O Grande Golpe' in 2005, and 'Do Amor' in 2008.
