Editor's note

Sanctus Real, a steady voice in Christian rock

A Toledo band that's been writing honest, guitar-driven songs about faith and life since the late '90s.

If you want to get a feel for their sound, start with "Lead Me" or "Lay It Down." They're both good examples of how the band writes about faith without overcomplicating things.

They've been a reliable presence in Christian rock for over two decades, with songs that feel grounded in everyday struggles. Tracks like "Lead Me" and "Lay It Down" became staples for listeners looking for straightforward, guitar-anchored music about belief and perseverance. Their name, which means "Holy King," hints at the consistent thread running through their work.

They formed in Toledo in 1996 and put out a self-titled debut in 1999. Over the years, they've released albums like "Say It Loud" in 2002 and "Breakthrough" in 2020, with lineup changes including founder Matt Hammitt's departure. The music has stayed focused on themes of faith and hope through songs like "The Redeemer" and "Unending Hope."

Sanctus Real formed in Toledo, Ohio in 1996, originally with Mark Graalman on vocals, Matt Hammitt on guitar and vocals, Dan Gartley on drums, and Chris Rohman on bass. Their name translates to "Holy King," which gives a sense of where their music comes from. They put out a self-titled debut album in 1999, and a song called "Nothing to Fear" got some radio play in Christian circles.

Their second album, 2002's "Say It Loud," had a couple of singles that did well, "I'm Not Alright" and "Everything About You." Over the next decade they kept releasing albums and songs that connected with their audience, like "Lead Me," "The Redeemer," and "Forgiven." You can hear that thread in later tracks like "That's Life" and "Unending Hope."

The lineup has shifted over time. Matt Hammitt, one of the founders, left the band. The current group includes Graalman, guitarist Dustin Lolli, bassist Chris Rohman, and drummer Jake Rye. They've put out records fairly consistently, including "Unstoppable God" in 2017 and "Breakthrough" in 2020.
