Sanfoneiros do Sul formed in 1995 in Passo Fundo, a city in Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul state. They're a group of accordion players who work with the traditional music of the region's gauchos. Their song "Alma da Cordeona" became well-known locally.
They released several albums, including "Alma da Cordeona" in 2001, "Saudade do Sul" in 2004, "Tributo aos Grandes Gaúchos" in 2007, and "Um Concerto para o Sul" in 2010. The band has included accordionists like Percival Munhoz, Cristiano Quevedo, Emerson Mello, and Jovane Ribeiro, along with guitarist Renato Pletsch, bassist Luciano Candia, and drummer Wagner de Almeida.
Some critics felt their approach to traditional music was too modern, but they kept playing. They've worked with other musicians, including Renato Borghetti, Jorge Drexler, and Gilberto Gil.
