Santa Sabina formed in Mexico City in 1989 with Rita Guerrero on vocals, Alejandro Marcovich on guitar, Pablo Valero on bass, Alfonso Figueroa on drums, and Jacobo Lieberman on violin. They released their self-titled debut album in 1992, which got some critical attention. Over the next decade they put out records like 'Azul' in 1994, 'Mar adentro' in 1996, and 'Espiral' in 1999.
Their sound mixed rock with folk touches and some experimental edges, with Guerrero's voice and Lieberman's violin giving it a particular texture. Songs like 'Ajusco Nevado' and 'El Cielo' show that blend of rock drive and more atmospheric, poetic writing. They were part of a certain alternative current in Mexican music during the 1990s.
Guerrero died from cancer in 2011, and the band ended around that time. Their records from that period still turn up in conversations about Mexican rock.
