Santamaria formed in Rio de Janeiro in the early 1990s with Marcelo Yuka on vocals and percussion, Fred Valle on bass, and Mú Carvalho on drums. Their 1996 song "Eu Sei, Tu És" became a national hit in Brazil, blending Brazilian rhythms with rock elements that caught attention beyond their local scene.
In 1999, Yuka was paralyzed after a shooting incident, but the band continued performing and recording with his vocals and lyrics remaining central to their sound. They released albums like "Exagerado" in 1998 and "Tempo" in 2001, with songs such as "Castelos na Areia" and "Falésia do Amor" showing their range from upbeat tracks to more reflective material.
Later albums included "Santamaria" in 2005 and "Caminho do Sol" in 2009, with tracks like "Gosto Que Tu Gostes" and "Sem Oasis Para Te Amar" continuing their mix of rhythm and lyrical directness.
