Santanna O Cantador was a Brazilian band formed in the 1970s by poet and singer-songwriter Ivan Lins. Their debut album 'Lápis de Cor' came out in 1977 and established their sound, which drew from samba, bossa nova, and Brazilian folk traditions.
Their music often dealt with themes of love and social justice, which sometimes drew criticism. Lins's political views and the band's association with left-leaning movements created tension with parts of their audience. They released several albums through the early 1980s, including 'Novo Tempo' in 1979 and 'Serenade' in 1983.
Other songs like 'Siá Filíça,' 'Tamanho de Paixão,' and 'Xote Universitário' show the range of their work. The band collaborated with Brazilian musicians including Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento, and Gilberto Gil, and worked with international artists like Stevie Wonder and Sting.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
