Editor's note

Sara, a Spanish band with a social edge

A late-1970s group whose music tackled inequality and authority.

For a sense of their sound, 'Porras' is the place to start. 'Vers(i)o' holds up too.

Their 1979 album 'Porras' gave them an anthem about social inequality, and they kept writing songs that dealt with real issues. That sometimes got them into trouble with authorities, which just underlined what they were saying. You can hear it in tracks like 'Vers(i)o' from their top songs.

They formed in the late 1970s with Antonio García de Diego on vocals and Juan Antonio Jiménez Castellanos on guitar. After 'Porras', they put out 'La gente' in 1980 and 'Tercer acto' in 1981, which had some musical experimentation.

Sara was a Spanish musical group that formed in the late 1970s. The band featured Antonio García de Diego on vocals and lyrics, Juan Antonio Jiménez Castellanos on guitar and composition, Manuel García de Diego on bass, and Juan Luis Suárez Garrido on drums. Their 1979 album 'Porras' included the title track that became a kind of anthem about social inequality.

Their music often dealt with social issues, which sometimes brought them into conflict with authorities. The band members were known to support leftist causes, which drew criticism from some quarters. They also faced legal issues over the use of the name Sara, which had been claimed by another artist.

After 'Porras', they released 'La gente' in 1980 and 'Tercer acto' in 1981, which showed some musical experimentation. A live compilation called 'Directo' came out in 1983.
