Sarcofago formed in Belo Horizonte, Brazil in 1985, originally called War Warfare. Their early lineup included vocalist Wagner "Antichrist" Lamounier, guitarist Gerald "Incubus" Minelli, and drummer Lucio "Lucifer" Oliveira. They released albums like "Rotting" in 1989 and "I.N.R.I." in 1990, with the latter's cover art featuring a crucified Jesus statue drawing particular attention.
Their sound was raw and aggressive, with songs like "The Necrofiliac" and "Satanic Lust" delivering distorted guitars and harsh vocals. The 1991 album "The Laws of Scourge" continued this approach. Tracks such as "Plunged In Blood" and "Black Vomit" exemplified their uncompromising style.
Sarcofago's music frequently dealt with themes that provoked strong reactions. Their lyrics and imagery led to censorship issues and criticism from various groups during their active years in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
