Sargento Lago formed in Rio de Janeiro in 2015, started by brothers Marcos and Mateus Barbosa with drummer Lucas Goulart. Their music pulls from funk, samba, and hip-hop, with songs like "Rota Tá Tá" and "Autoridade" becoming popular. They released their self-titled debut album in 2017, followed by "Favelas em Cena" in 2019 and "Um Novo Amanhã" in 2021.
Their lyrics often touch on social issues like poverty and inequality, which has drawn both support and criticism. One song, "Isso Aqui É Golpe," addressed the 2016 impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff and sparked debate. The band's straightforward approach to these topics has kept them in conversations beyond just music.
They work out of Rio's favelas, where Marcos handles melodies and lyrics while Mateus focuses on beats. Their sound stays grounded in local rhythms even as they reach wider audiences. Other tracks like "Brasil" and "Criança Ferida" show their range from celebratory to more reflective themes.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
