Sasha was a freestyle group that came out of New York City in the mid-1980s, with Sandra Diaz on lead vocals and the songwriting and production duo of Steve and Karen Gottlieb. Their 1988 debut single "Open Up My Heart To You (Don't Hurt Me)" became a dance chart hit, driven by its beat and Diaz's vocals. That song and others like "So Good For You" helped define a sound that mixed dance-pop with Latin rhythms for the club scene.
They released four studio albums between 1988 and 1999, starting with their self-titled debut. The group faced difficulties in the 1990s as musical tastes shifted and they dealt with record label issues. Karen Gottlieb died in 1994, which was a hard blow for the band.
Their music, especially "Open Up My Heart To You," still gets played in clubs and on dance playlists. The group's work from that late-80s period remains what they're known for.
