Sasha Alex Sloan grew up in Boston and studied at Berklee College of Music before moving to Los Angeles. Her 2018 single 'Dancing with Your Ghost' became a breakout moment, though she'd been writing songs that dealt with love and loss for some time before that.
Her music tends toward straightforward, confessional lyrics over dreamy production. Songs like 'Thank God,' 'Here,' and 'Is It Just Me?' are built around simple, direct phrases that feel like something you'd say to a friend. She's worked with producer King Henry on much of her material, and has also collaborated with artists like Kygo and Sam Feldt.
Her 2018 EP was called 'Sad Girl Summer,' followed by 'Self Portrait' in 2019. The titles give a fair sense of what you're getting, songs that lean into melancholy without much pretense. Some listeners have found her writing too on-the-nose, but she's kept at it, treating songwriting as a kind of personal processing.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
