Saul Ricardo formed in Matosinhos in 1983, started by three friends named Saul, Ricardo, and Zé. Their first album, 'Três Amigos,' came out in 1988 and included the song 'O Bacalhau Quer Alho,' which became widely popular in Portugal. The track's lighthearted take on a traditional dish seemed to connect with people.
They put out other albums like 'O Nosso Canto' in 1990 and 'Festa do Mar' in 1992. Their songs, including 'A Dança Da Mãozinha' and 'Sem Dinheiro e Sem Cueca,' often mixed pop with elements of Portuguese folk music. Some early critics called their work too commercial, but they kept making music in a similar vein for years.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
