Background notes

Archive material and source history

Sawyer Brown formed in 1981 with Mark Miller, Jim Scholten, and Gregg Hubbard. They started playing honky-tonks and bars, building a following through live shows. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1984, followed by records like 'Somewhere in the Night' in 1986 and 'Step That Step' in 1990.

Some of their songs that stuck around include 'Can You Hear Me Now' and 'All These Years.' They had a legal dispute with Capitol Records in 1992 over royalties, which they settled out of court. The lineup changed over time, with Hubbard leaving in 1991 and Scholten retiring in 2008.

They kept touring and putting out music, like the 2016 album 'Mission Temple Fireworks Stand.' The band's sound stayed recognizable through those changes, anchored by Miller's presence and their connection to the live circuit they came up on.
