Als die Tochter das Schmuckstück gewahrt,
beginnt sie zu schluchzen den Vater trifft's hart.
Anstatt sich zu freuen, schreit sie ihn an.
Sie entreißt ihm das Kleinod und läuft von dannen.
Die goldene Kette vom Mädchen erkannt -
erst unlängst im Frühling gab sie es aus der Hand.
Als Zeichen der Liebe tief am Waldesgrund
gab sie es ihrem Liebsten in gar zärtlicher Stund.
"Die goldene Kette nimm Dir,
als Zeichen der Liebe ganz tief in mir!"
Sie rennt in die Fremde, findet schließlich sein
Grab.
Drauf stand: "HIER RUHT EIN JÜNGLING,
DER IM KAMPFE STARB."
Sie kniet sich nieder und erwartet den Tod.
Als er sie ereilt gibt sie ihm das Kleinod.
"Die goldene Kette nimm Dir,
bringe mich zu meinem Liebsten dafür...!"
