Scott Klopfenstein grew up in Upper Arlington, Ohio, where his father played jazz piano and his mother classical violin. He started on piano at five and later picked up saxophone, trombone, and guitar. In the early 1990s, he co-founded the alternative swing band Squirrel Nut Zippers with Jimbo Mathus.
Their debut album 'The Inevitable' came out in 1996, featuring 'The Hilarious,' which became something of a signature track for the band. Klopfenstein stayed with Squirrel Nut Zippers until they disbanded around 2000, then released his first solo album simply called 'Klopfenstein' the following year.
He's put out other solo records like 'A Little Blue Light' and 'The Blue Monk,' and his song 'Welcome To New York' appears among his top tracks. The music tends to stay grounded in the instrumental range he learned early on, without much of the swing revival sound that defined the Zippers.
