Sea Shanties

Sea Shanties were a group that worked with traditional maritime songs in the 1940s. They performed in London pubs, taking old sea chanteys and giving them a folk arrangement that suited the rooms they played in. Their version of 'Spanish Ladies' became particularly well-known, with its call-and-response structure and steady rhythm.

They recorded several albums, including one titled Spanish Ladies. The lineup included John Masefield on vocals, Alfred Hayes on guitar, Stan Hugill on accordion, and Peter Bellamy on concertina. Their repertoire also included songs like 'The Dead Horse,' 'Billy Riley,' and 'Whiskey Johnny,' all drawn from the same tradition of work songs sung aboard sailing ships.

Their approach was straightforward, no elaborate production, just voices and a few acoustic instruments carrying tunes that were meant to be sung in unison. It was music made for joining in, not just listening to, and it found an audience in places where people still remembered the old ways.
