Sef-Yu

Sef-Yu formed in 1999 around frontman Youssef Soufi, with producer Philus and rapper Skop. Their debut album 'Qui suis-je?' came out in 2003 and drew attention to the Paris suburbs they came from.

They kept recording through the 2000s, putting out albums like 'Vérité Cachée' in 2006 and 'Suis-je le gardien de mon frère' in 2008. Their 2010 album 'L'Autre' included 'Au lieu de se faire la guerre,' which became one of their better-known tracks. Other songs like 'Plus d'feeling' and 'Amitié et amertume' show their mix of hip-hop with more melodic French pop.

Sef-Yu worked with other artists including Youssou N'Dour and Soprano. Their music often dealt with social themes, though they avoided becoming purely political spokespeople. The group's sound stayed grounded in Soufi's vocals and Philus's production, even as their subject matter sometimes brought them into public debates.
