Self formed in 2010 around singer-songwriter Rebecca Garton and guitarist Thomas Fekete. Their debut album, 'The Distance Between Us,' came out in 2012 and included the song 'Stay Home.' Bassist David Hay and drummer Adam Fekete eventually joined the lineup.
Garton's lyrics often dealt with personal struggles and mental health, which drew both appreciation and criticism from listeners. The band's sound shifted over their next few albums, moving toward more electronic textures on 2015's 'Lost in the Shadows' and then back toward acoustic arrangements on 2019's 'Inner Light.'
